Due to technical difficulties we were regretably unable to record this sermon!
Having read Malachi 3 together, David Perry gave the congregation opportunity to come and share their reflections on the passage. Andrew C, Sue T, Helen R, Keith, Vanessa T & Chris F accepted the invitation. David then revealed 4 themes in the passage to us, using the attached powerpoint as helpful images.
1) Make way for the messenger: Jermiah 1:9-10. The prophets' job was to pull up, tear down and take apart... and then start to rebuild. The ratio of tearing down to building up is 2:1. We need to stop 'just carrying on'. The LORD will be quick to judge sorcerers, adulteres, perjurers, those who defraud labourers, those who oppress & those who pervert justice. There are things we need to tear down and destroy in our lives, church and society so that God can build His kindgom through us. Things will be different. We will be different. We should always have an 'open heart' when we come to Him, the Refiner... So He can refine us.
2) We are to submit ourselves and be obedient to God, ensuring that we give Him everything. God does not change. We need to expect transformation. This can be uncomfortable, but we can be hopeful because God loves us so much. God has not turned His back on us, it is we who have turned away from Him-we often make worship about us and what we want-It's about Him! He is faithful. He continues to invite us to return to Him. Have we given EVERYTHING to Him? Give to God what is His anyway and He will bless our land. There is hope!
3) We live in a culture, where many feel that trusting in God and following His lead is foolish. They say that following God is futile. This is a lie! Either occassionally or regularly: Do we fail to trust God by labouring in our own strength, not looking to Him for equipping and empowering? Do we under-estimate the importance and power of prayer? Are we seen as a 'people' who truly trust God or a group doing 'nice things'? The world calls the arrogant blessed, those who do evil prosper- this is futile! Our God is LORD, Saviour and Judge!
4) "They will be mine" - are we His? As sheep are branded to show to whom they belong, do 'we bear a mark' that shows who we belong to? Is it God? Are we distinctive? Those who belong to him are his treasured possession and the invitation is always open. There are two ways to live (18): Righteous who serve God or wicked who do not serve God. The choice & consequence is yours! Will you let Jesus transform you?
