News

Operation Christmas Child 2009

Many thanks for all the support given to this year’s campaign. Just over 26,000 decorated and filled shoe boxes went section_slices_60from the Hull Depot. Without the generosity and all the hard work of the volunteers from Anlaby Park this would not be possible. Three lorries went to Kiev in the Ukraine, to Belarus and to The Crimea carrying Love in a box. Our logo, (see above) is a shoe box with aeroplane wings on it…or as we like to think of them, angel wings that carry the Good News of Jesus Christ right into the hands and hearts of little, needy children along with possibly the only present they will  ever receive. Once again, on behalf of the children… THANK YOU!!!

Alpha

Alpha is requiring venues for the New Year. Please see any of the Alpha team if you can help in anyway. Many Thanks.

Thank You…

A big thank you to everyone who supported the Church Christmas Carolling – a wonderful £146.92p was raised for ‘Action for Children’. Thanks to the singers supported by John on the trumpet, the collectors, the ladies in the kitchen and the cashiers at the end! Hope to see you all again next year. Jennie

Offering…

The offering for Sunday 13th December totalled £748 against a budget of £869. Average for year is £821

How a conversation in the street changed my life?

Just over three years ago my life as a Christian man was ticking over quite nicely, or so I thought at the time. I didn’t need anything extra to do, God and I had a nice arrangement. I would go to church with my family on Sunday’s, I would play my guitar in the band and that would be my part of the ‘bargain’ so to speak. I honestly believed that God was ‘right’ with me and that he was happy with my endeavours. Indeed, if I kept this approach going he would leave me alone to pursue my career, my music and my athletics without giving me any ‘hassle’. However, God didn’t leave me alone, I didn’t really know him or understand what he really wanted from me and this niggled at me. God niggled at me. Why did I feel embarrassed and out of my depth when others spoke with so much knowledge and authority about God? Why did I feel a bit of a fraud on a Sunday? As such questions ate away at me inside it began to dawn on me that I was being given a message by God. He wasn’t happy with my ‘part time’ approach to Christian life and I had to do something about it. I discussed these thoughts with Shaeron my wife, in particular I bemoaned the lack of fellowship amongst men and the lack of time on my hands to develop a proper relationship with God. This attitude continued for weeks, if not months and then a conversation in the street between my wife and a friend of hers changed everything.

My wife’s friend mentioned that her bloke attended a men’s breakfast fellowship, every Saturday morning. Apparently the men enjoyed a time of fellowship, ate breakfast, talked about ‘blokey’ things, prayed and then studied the bible together. The die had been cast. I received a set of instructions telling me where to go, at what time and who I was likely to meet when I got there. A few weeks of procrastination later and I finally plucked up the ‘courage’ to go. I didn’t realise at the time but this decision would change my life  . . .

Since joining the men’s breakfast fellowship I have come closer to God, I have developed my knowledge of scripture, received answer to prayer and seen a transformation in my relationship with others around me. I have received wise counsel from men with far more experience than me of what it means to be a Christian man in today’s world. I have attended men’s fellowship day conferences, organised and played in services for the good folk of the Salvation Army hostel and sung in the fellowship choir on men’s fellowship Sunday. Other opportunities remain to be explored, the men’s breakfast fellowship has a prison ministry and provides much needed funds for several charities, including the sponsoring of a school via the Koloko trust and some of the men are involved in these enterprises, touching the lives of those less fortunate than themselves.

The men’s breakfast fellowship has been organised by our ‘brothers’ from Willerby Methodist Church for the past 20 years but recently a change of leadership occurred and I was appointed joint organiser along with Chris Aldred from Willerby. Every Saturday at 8.30 groups of approximately 8 men meet in the house of that weeks ‘host’. Hosting is completely voluntary and can lead to some quite hilarious ‘domestic’ situations. (Wives seem to get a particular amount of amusement from the way in which their men prepare a simple breakfast!) Methodists, Baptists, Free Church and Anglicans are all represented at the breakfast table and this adds to the flavour and diversity of discussion! Sessions are led by a nominated leader who uses a study book and bibles are compulsory for the teaching that takes place after prayer time. All are united in coming together to enjoy fellowship and come closer to Jesus, our Lord and Saviour!

I would dearly love for you to join us and give the fellowship a try. I have made good friends, developed my understanding of scripture and matured as a Christian man. I no longer feel out of my depth in conversation or a fraud on Sunday’s. Most importantly I now spend ‘quality’ time with God. If any of this interests you please don’t hesitate to get in touch . . . it could be something that changes your life too!
